The Live N Learn Foundation is pleased to announce the commencement of the Indigenous specific Break Through mentoring program, delivered in partnership with the La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council and supported by funding from the Australian Government through the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations – Indigenous Employment Fund.
In 2010-11 Break Through Mentoring Young Kooris for Employment is being offered as a pilot program to 25 Indigenous young people from the Randwick and Botany Local Government Areas. Centering in La Perouse the Break Through Indigenous Employment mentoring program has built on the experience of the Western Sydney program and through collaboration with TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute Aboriginal Education Unit it has been specifically adapt for the Indigenous community.
Mentors recruited from local businesses will complete a TAFE training course designed to equip them with the necessary skills in Mentoring and incorporating a Cultural Education program to give an introduction to Indigenous culture and the local Aboriginal community and heritage. Once trained Mentors will be matched with local Aboriginal young people and individual mentoring sessions will focus on helping the young person get a job.
Aboriginal young people, aged 16-25, from La Perouse or the Randwick or Botany LGAs are invited to contact Break Through to find out more about how they can become involved and gain the support of a local employment mentor.
